Do you know what is most remarkable about the fantastic? It is how you can grow so accustomed to it, so much so that you begin to believe it is truth; and what was normal becomes terrifying and unfamiliar. It was with this growing sense of security that the women set out the first night after their father's edit had been passed. Evelyn assured them all that there was simply nothing to fear and that they 'should all hurry up'!
By standing united against their father they had lost their privacy. Their solidarity actually surprised them all, each one shocked and relieved that their sisterly bond could be so strong after so much deceit. Their father was dumbstruck as he watched each of the girls give the same answer.
"Father, we know nothing of how our shoes are destroyed in the night... but I am so very tired, may I please be excused?" He was furiously but sat silently in his high back chair glaring as each curtsied and left them room treading lightly on their tender heels. He thought them absurdly brave to tell such a bold face lie when he held their livelihood in his hands.
In retaliation of their stubbornness he insisted that they all share a room and be treated as children. It was clear they needed to relearn their childhood lessons and so Jenna's room would hence forth be called the nursery. The very idea that the king would be willing to humiliate his own family so publicly made people wonder how stable the king was. It seemed that fate had intervened though for in his rage his daughters chuckled at his foolishness. They would no longer be caught sneaking out of their bedrooms but would sleep just a foot away from the entrance to their secret and beloved kingdom.
The princesses warned their men down below halfheartedly and then thought no more of the world of lies above. Eve could not have been more pleased. She had grown accustomed to the beginnings of paranoia and destruction; she saw their father sink quickly into this role and rejoiced. Evelyn too, had a much fast transition from naivete to her newly formed sinister self and Eve could hardly ask for more. It was nice when things went according to plan.
