The weather was truly terrible for the first few days. It was around 55 degrees, cloudy, foggy, and misting. They arrived on Thursday night and I don't think the sun came out until Monday so we were thrilled to drive up enough of Mt Tam to be above the Fog Bank. As you can see, it was beautiful above the clouds.
We cheated a little and drove up most of the mountain (For those of you who don't know, flying to California is exhausting and with the time difference you're pretty much exhausted all of the time), but once we got to the top of the we were able to get out and walk around a bit. There were some really cool paths that wound around the strange, tree-less fields.
Here's us driving across the Golden Gate Bridge and driving down Lombard St. It's the one with the crazy zig-zag road because the hill is so steep that you can't drive straight down it (It's also a one-way street in the hill you can see off in the distance and a one-way street in the other direction at the zig-zag part, but that's a different story...)

After San Francisco we spent some time in Monterey and further down the coast. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (which people here are always talking about, but personally I think the one in Boston is better), drove down to Big Sur and had lunch at the river, and took a mini hike to a pretty cool waterfall.
I'd say the best feature of the Monterey Aquarium was the wildlife outside in the ocean (that you can see from several observation decks). Here's some sea otters resting on the rocks (and some kayakers looking on). And below that is my mom at the waterfall.
